Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA)

Little Learners has been selected to participate in a Federal Government initiative.

The Australian Government Department of Education and Training via Education Services Australia have asked us to ‘trial’ ELLA in our Kindergarten Room.

What is ELLA?

ELLA is an enjoyable, digital, play-based language-learning program for children in preschool. It is an Australian Government initiative designed to encourage more students to study language, it inspires children by driving a genuine interest in a new language and culture.

In ELLA, children learn one of seven languages that take into account some of Australia’s most commonly spoken languages, major trading partners and languages in the Australian Curriculum – Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese or Spanish – through fun applications (‘apps’). The apps have been specially designed for preschool children.

ELLA aligns with the Australian Government’s screen time recommendations for young children, with a maximum of 40 minutes per week per child across multiple small sessions.

You can only choose one language and we have chosen Spanish, as it has been a part of our weekly curriculum since 2015.

We believe ELLA will enhance the Spanish lessons provided by Miss Erika each week.

It’s great to see the Australian Government acknowledging the importance of young children learning a foreign language, something that we also we firmly believe in and have been doing here at Little Learners for over two years.

What Next?

Parents and Guardians of children enrolled in our Kindergarten room will be given an information brochure on ELLA.

Miss Natalie, Miss Avinka, Miss Helen and Miss Tahnee will all be able to answer any questions about ELLA and discuss with you the role it will play in our Kindergarten curriculum.
